  • Mental Health Diagnostic Assessment (DA): Includes clinical interview, rating scales, and screeners
  • Evidence-Based Tools: Standardized assessments to explore symptoms, behaviors, and patterns
  • Collateral Input: Optional feedback from family, school, or work contacts (with consent)
  • Review & Recommendations: Therapist reviews findings, compares collateral input, and discusses next steps

Timeline & Sessions

Depending on the depth of concerns and available documentation, the ADHD assessment may take 2–3 sessions to complete. If you’ve had a previous diagnostic assessment, we encourage you to share it to help guide the process.

ADHD Assessment – Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that builds on a mental health diagnostic assessment. It includes clinical interviews, rating scales, and collateral input to explore symptoms, behaviors, and patterns related to Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder.

Who can get an ADHD assessment?

We offer assessments for individuals aged 18 and older who are experiencing symptoms such as inattention, impulsiveness, restlessness, or difficulty with focus and follow-through.

What’s the first step?

Start with a consultation appointment to discuss your goals and concerns. From there, we’ll schedule a mental health diagnostic assessment and begin the ADHD evaluation process.

What tools are used in the assessment?

We use a combination of:

  • Standardized rating scales and screeners
  • Clinical interviews
  • Collateral input from family, school, or work (with your consent)
  • Review of past evaluations (if available)

How many sessions does it take?

The full assessment typically takes 2–3 sessions, depending on the complexity of symptoms and availability of collateral information.

What if I’ve already had a diagnostic assessment elsewhere?

You’re welcome to share previous evaluations. This helps us build on existing information and avoid duplication.

What happens after the assessment?

You’ll receive a summary of findings and personalized recommendations, which may include:

  • Therapy (individual, family, or group)
  • Psychiatry or medication consultation
  • Skills-based support
  • Neuropsychological testing (if indicated)
  • Lifestyle or occupational therapy referrals

Is this a formal diagnosis?

Yes—if the assessment supports an ADHD diagnosis, it will be documented in your clinical summary and can be used to guide treatment or support accommodations.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most components of the assessment are billable to insurance. We recommend checking with your plan or contacting us for more details.

Will I receive an ADHD diagnosis after the assessment?

Not necessarily. While our assessment process is thorough and evidence-based, a diagnosis is not guaranteed. Our goal is to understand your symptoms and experiences as fully as possible.

A diagnosis may not be given if:

  • Symptoms do not meet the clinical criteria for ADHD
  • Other mental health conditions better explain the concerns
  • Additional evaluation (e.g., neuropsychological testing) is needed for clarity

In these cases, we will still provide personalized recommendations and may suggest further assessment or alternative supports to ensure you receive the most appropriate care.

Next Steps May Include:

  • Recommendations for individual therapy to explore related concerns
  • Referral for neuropsychological testing for further clarification
  • Support for executive functioning, emotional regulation, or anxiety
  • Psychoeducation and lifestyle strategies to improve focus and well-being
  • Ongoing collaboration to revisit the assessment if symptoms evolve

Even without a formal diagnosis, we are committed to helping you find the right tools, supports, and services to move forward.

ADHD Assessment – Not Sure If It’s the Right Fit?

Can anyone request an ADHD assessment?

Yes, but not everyone will be an appropriate candidate for an ADHD evaluation at the time of referral. Our goal is to ensure that assessments are clinically appropriate, timely, and helpful based on each individual’s needs.

Why might an ADHD assessment not be recommended right now?

There are a few reasons we may delay or not recommend an ADHD assessment:

  • Current symptoms are better explained by another mental health condition (e.g., trauma, anxiety, depression)
  • Significant instability (e.g., acute crisis, substance use, housing insecurity) that may interfere with accurate assessment
  • Lack of sufficient history or context to support a diagnostic process
  • Recent comprehensive evaluation already completed elsewhere
  • Client goals may be better met through therapy or other supports first

What happens if I’m not eligible right now?

We’ll provide personalized recommendations to support your current needs. This may include:

  • Individual or group therapy
  • Psychoeducation and skill-building
  • Stabilization or case management support
  • Re-evaluation at a later time when appropriate

Can I still receive services at Progress Valley?

Absolutely. Even if an ADHD assessment isn’t recommended, we offer a wide range of services to support emotional regulation, focus, and well-being. We’re here to help you find the right path forward.
