Abby is a mental health and substance use disorders intern. She has received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of St. Thomas and is currently in the process of completing her master’s degree in counseling psychology at the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Professional Psychology. She has 3 years of experience working in the mental health field, working in hospitals with many different populations. Abby provides individual mental health therapy, substance use therapy, and group therapy. She approaches therapy through a person-centered lens to help clients become more self-aware without judgement. Abby does this through unconditional positive regard where she creates a safe space for clients to feel accepted and valued. She finds being able to develop a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients and creating a safe space for them to express what is going on in their lives as one the most rewarding things about her work. She was inspired to pursue a career in the mental health and substance use field because it is something that has affected a lot of people close to her and she wanted to gain the tools to help other who are affected by their mental health or substance use.
When not at work, Abby enjoys spending time outside doing various activities and spending time with loved ones and friends. One thing that people are surprised to learn about her, is she was once ranked first in the country for shot put.
