August: The Month of Wellness

HomeNewsAugust: The Month of Wellness

When we think of the word “wellness,” our minds often jump to physical health—avoiding illness or pain. However, we tend to overlook mental and emotional wellness, which can have an even greater impact on our overall well-being than just physical health alone.

So what exactly does wellness entail? Wellness, according to the Global Wellness Institute, is defined as “the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.” This definition underscores that wellness is a comprehensive approach to well-being, extending beyond just physical health.

The Global Wellness Institute identifies and emphasizes six specific dimensions of wellness, each contributing to a balanced and fulfilling life:

  • Physical: Nourishing a health body through exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc.
  • Mental: Engaging the world through learning, problem-solving, creativity, etc.
  • Emotional: Being aware of, accepting and expressing our feelings, and understanding the feelings of others.
  • Spiritual: Searching for meaning and higher purpose in human existence.
  • Social: Connecting and engaging with others and our communities in meaningful ways.
  • Environmental: Fostering positive interrelationships between planetary health and human actions, choices and wellbeing.

Each of these dimensions interplays to support a well-rounded and integrated approach to personal health and fulfillment.

Reflecting on the six dimensions of wellness, it’s important to consider how daily challenges can hinder our sense of balance and fulfillment. For instance, common roadblocks might include:

  • Physical Wellness: “Finish taking care of the kids” or “I’m too tired” can lead to neglecting exercise or healthy eating.
  • Emotional Wellness: “Get this work done” might prevent you from addressing your emotional needs or managing stress effectively.
  • Mental Wellness: “Make more money” can cause you to overlook activities that stimulate intellectual growth or creativity.
  • Social Wellness: Busy schedules may limit time for meaningful relationships or social interactions.
  • Spiritual Wellness: Constant demands might push aside personal reflection or practices that provide a sense of purpose.
  • Environmental Wellness: A hectic lifestyle can make it difficult to consider the impact of your environment on your well-being.

In striving to advance our careers, manage family responsibilities, or pursue other goals, it’s easy to lose sight of overall wellness. However, achieving balance in these dimensions is crucial. The best version of ourselves as employees, parents, students, or thinkers often emerges when we are centered and attentive to our holistic well-being.

Regaining control and achieving wellness involves a mindful approach to balancing the various dimensions of well-being. Here are some practical steps to help you achieve and maintain wellness:

  1. Assess Your Current State: Take stock of each dimension of your wellness. Identify areas where you feel balanced and those that need improvement.
  2. Set Priorities: Determine which dimensions are currently most out of balance and focus on them first. This can help you create a more manageable plan.
  3. Create a Plan: Develop actionable goals for each dimension. For example:
    • Physical Wellness: Schedule regular exercise and meal planning.
    • Emotional Wellness: Practice stress management techniques, such as mindfulness or therapy.
    • Mental Wellness: Dedicate time for intellectual pursuits and learning.
    • Social Wellness: Schedule regular social activities and nurture relationships.
    • Spiritual Wellness: Engage in practices that resonate with your values, like meditation or reflection.
    • Environmental Wellness: Make choices that contribute to a healthier environment, both personally and globally.
  4. Establish Routines: Integrate wellness activities into your daily or weekly routines. Consistency is key to long-term success.
  5. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care and make time for activities that rejuvenate and energize you. This could be hobbies, relaxation, or quality time with loved ones.
  6. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to excessive demands and delegate tasks when possible. This helps prevent burnout and maintains your overall balance.
  7. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out for help. This could be from friends, family, or professionals like coaches or therapists who can provide guidance and support.
  8. Monitor Your Progress: Regularly evaluate your wellness goals and adjust your plan as needed. Celebrate your successes and reflect on areas for improvement.
  9. Be Flexible: Life is unpredictable, and maintaining wellness is an ongoing process. Be adaptable and willing to make changes to your approach as circumstances evolve.
  10. Stay Mindful: Practice mindfulness to stay present and aware of how your actions impact your well-being. This helps you make more conscious choices that align with your wellness goals.

By taking these steps, you can work towards achieving a more balanced and fulfilling state of wellness, ultimately enhancing your overall quality of life.
